This is a community-led effort to help OISC determine the spread of devil weed on Oʻahu. ANYONE can participate anytime!!
- Simply pick a trail to survey.
- Record your survey and plant locations using a free smartphone app.
- Look for devil weed on the trail and pull it out.
- Share your survey data with OISC when you’re done.
- Get free swag! Stickers, hats, and if you hit 20 miles…a free t-shirt!

PŪPŪKEA-PAUMALU VOLUNTEER TRIP – Trail Surveys
WHEN: Usually the last Saturday of the month (9am-1pm).
This is an Adopt-A-Park partnership with the Pūpūkea-Paumalu State Park Reserve on O‘ahu’s North Shore.
Each trip focuses on surveying trails for devil weed (Chromolaena odorata) and pulling it out when we find it to prevent it’s further spread. Devil weed is listed as one of the 100 World’s Worst invasive species. It’s a severe agricultural pest, invasive crop and ranch lands and it’s toxic to livestock. It smothers forest edges and native vegetation. It’s high oil content in leaves, combined with it’s dry stems and dry habitat makes it a fire hazard. These trail surveys will remove plants before they mature, preventing hitchhiking seeds being spread via hikers and bikers.
Volunteers will be hand-pulling plants, hiking along easy to moderate trails. Expect exposure to sun, heat, rain and mud, mosquitoes and some steep areas of trail. Volunteers should be physically fit and able to hike up to 4.5 hours at a moderate pace.

LYON ARBORETUM VOLUNTEER TRIP – Forest surveys, OISC-style!
WHEN: The second Saturday of every month at Lyon Arboretum in Manoa Valley from 9:00am-2:00pm.
Canceled until further notice. We plan to resume activities soon.
Each trip focuses on removing high-threat invasive plants that, if allowed to spread, would threaten the healthy native forests that are the “sponge” that captures our island’s fresh water. By removing invasive plants from the lowlands, we prevent them from “jumping the fence-line” into the native forest communities at higher elevations. As a volunteer, you will help remove incipient, invasive plants that are found only at Lyon Arboretum. Your help will contribute to the long term goal of completely eliminating these species from the island before they have a chance to do harm and become a permanent problem in the island’s landscape.
Volunteers will be hand-pulling plants and hiking off-trail in moderately steep to steep terrain with exposure to sun, rain, mosquitoes and muddy conditions. Volunteers should be physically fit for strenuous activity.
